My blogger profile contains a sentence “My exercising consists of running, aerobic and resistance workouts at a gym, racquetball, and hiking.” Yes, that’s right, I play racquetball!<br /><br />Generally once a week with a friend who is older than me (in his 60’s), but he’s in great shape, still “quick as a cat”, and accurate with his shots! We usually play on a week night after I get done with work.<br /><br />I work at Kodak, I have for most of my career. You might be thinking - Kodak? Is that company still around? Gosh, when was the last time someone used film? Good questions! I’ll just answer by saying, yes Kodak is still around, although it is very much less than it was in the glory days of chemically based photography. I have survived working at Kodak all these years by hiding under my desk every time they come around to lay off people. I even have a George Costanza like napping platform under my desk as these layoffs occur quite frequently, basically every time the price of silver goes up, or there has been a recent rash of grandmother deaths, specifically grandmothers that used only their Instamatic cameras for picture taking.<br /><br />Another interesting result of Kodak’s downfall is in the age of its workforce as Kodak hasn’t really hired anyone since the last century. As a result the average age of an employee is pretty advanced. It is rare when a Kodaker is younger than 50.<br /><br />So, the other day I am in a meeting at the end of the work day with a woman named Gretchen. I am scheduled to go play racquetball after this meeting. Now Gretchen is one of those rare Kodak employees who happens to be under 50. Heck, she might even be in her 30s – I’m not too good at judging the age of people. Anyway, my meeting with Gretchen was running late so I suggested we wrap things up. I even told her directly that I’d like to finish up because I had an appointment to play racquetball afterwards. Gretchen looks up at me and says “Racquetball? Well, that is very 80’s of you.” I almost died laughing!<br /><br />But she is so right! Racquetball, like Kodak, have fallen a long way since the 80’s. Everyone played racquetball back then and any fitness center worth joining in those days had to have racquetball courts. And those that had courts with glass back walls that allowed others to watch a match were the coolest. And you want to talk about cool; it would be a picture of me in my racquetball attire back then. Red tight shorty- shorts, with knee, high white tube socks with matching double red stripes across the top, a yellow shirt (yeah baby – sporting the Kodak colors!), a neon head band (without even a logo on it!), and a wrist band that took up most of your forearm. Is this what Gretchen was picturing when I said I was going to go to play racquetball?<br /><br />To illustrate the state of racquetball today, I play in the only place I know in the Rochester area that still has courts. There are two courts in a side part of the building that houses an indoor tennis club. Actually, there are a couple of other courts at a local college gymnasium, but they are reserved for students only. One day I actually called the college to ask if they were used much, and if not, perhaps they could open them up for local residents to use. I was told however that were used, quite frequently actually,by the a student majoring in Civil War history, and the three Computer Science geeks who use them for acting out their Dungeons & Dragons fantasies.<br /><br />To further add insult to racquetball, this tennis club recently had netting permanently put up in one of the courts so a baseball coach can use it to give swinging instructions to his students. So, that leaves one court still devoted to racquetball. It was last painted in 1986 (Go Mets!). You have to be careful with turning on or off the fan in the ceiling in this court for the risk of causing a storm of condensation to rain down on the spot where you receive the serve. The floor boards there have become slightly warped from the years of these little rainstorms and thus present challenges when opening the court's only small door. A door made just tall enough for a hobbit, so when it doesn’t open fully, you’d better be a skinny hobbit!<br /><br />But hey, I continue to play. Racquetball is still a great sport and adds some agility to the weekly exercise routine. A painful chore considering the knee and hip issues I have been dealing with. I am going significantly slower on my runs now. Lately I am trying to stay below the threshold of pain, while maintaining some sort running shape in hopes of not aggravating the existing aches, or creating new ones. I think about quitting . . . maybe I should just take up biking instead? I’d have to buy a bike first!<br /><br />But then I’m not ready to give up running. Maybe I will just leave the GPS watch at home so I don’t see how much slower I am going. I could still run a race, but let myself stop on the course and chat with people along the way. I could cross the finish line with a smile, rather than try to get my official time and calculate my splits over water and bananas, as PRs are a thing of the past now.<br /><br />To be continued. . .<br /><br />Some influence for this post came from <a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/18/what-a-cow-taught-me-about-running/#more-57939">this article</a>.Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-32668472167485673142010-06-06T17:15:00.000-07:002010-06-07T09:48:00.286-07:00A Run to Holley FallsIt was a cool (50's) rainy day today, so what better<br />way to spend it than by doing a long run in the morning, then taking a nap in the afternoon. I did an 11.5 mile run along the Erie Canal going from Brockport to Holley and back again.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMZ1ocPv7C0cWPo8Tk0z2y8009Y_nVTjMfnzwGlM5fLHWFIuFGryK7cG4lZLM1GTmxSFtGNPeBM4oNnqzJNxFe4yp9BPcujgvjHcgu8MA2cZCy8m4SpTA6a7J6yYBDIh8yQsReoMds51Q/s1600/2010-06-06Run+001mod.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 108px; height: 166px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMZ1ocPv7C0cWPo8Tk0z2y8009Y_nVTjMfnzwGlM5fLHWFIuFGryK7cG4lZLM1GTmxSFtGNPeBM4oNnqzJNxFe4yp9BPcujgvjHcgu8MA2cZCy8m4SpTA6a7J6yYBDIh8yQsReoMds51Q/s200/2010-06-06Run+001mod.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479822519959319426" border="0" /></a>With the dreary conditions, and the canal path seemingly going endlessly forward, I felt the loneliness of the long distance runner. Arriving in Holley<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhh4dfWIDS1jOSs-lGa1yY6zlKIVvQpjqoZlnkZIFyq8qfbPafbu9ZqIacV4eLcJgW1LmH7TpOzlaiGkiCIreYmzGwY1Vasr1vFa3aHLT44EWdRuL1fJk5nz_9BNUPkGAAL3r7sA8pRfI/s1600/2010-06-06Run+008.jpg"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 189px; height: 156px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhh4dfWIDS1jOSs-lGa1yY6zlKIVvQpjqoZlnkZIFyq8qfbPafbu9ZqIacV4eLcJgW1LmH7TpOzlaiGkiCIreYmzGwY1Vasr1vFa3aHLT44EWdRuL1fJk5nz_9BNUPkGAAL3r7sA8pRfI/s200/2010-06-06Run+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479823068346589106" border="0" /></a> offered a nice break as I detoured down a path to Holley Falls. This is actually a man-made falls, carrying overflow from the Erie Canal into the east branch of Sandy Creek. With all the rain today, the water was over taking the picnic area.<br /><br />Also in the woods I came upon a patch of wild strawberries. They were very small as most wild strawberries are, so I took some and smeared them around my lips. This made for some nice tastes and smells for the run back. The nap later in the afternoon was good too.Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-30901155439400982752010-06-05T05:52:00.000-07:002010-06-05T06:04:00.238-07:00Rochester JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge Race<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyVQYZk3-V1rQdr69erWBLF7r37oLfYZ863Jaxy1_9T7F_-62DfapYogwhXxRVUIV6OY8pi5J6ERSxr6Fe2e1enVg31i6x2NyAa_xCoElfSuUjggqDo7JQD7AdIIXpls5KHq5FEutTMxw/s1600/corpchal.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyVQYZk3-V1rQdr69erWBLF7r37oLfYZ863Jaxy1_9T7F_-62DfapYogwhXxRVUIV6OY8pi5J6ERSxr6Fe2e1enVg31i6x2NyAa_xCoElfSuUjggqDo7JQD7AdIIXpls5KHq5FEutTMxw/s200/corpchal.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479274315137758018" border="0" /></a>At the exact same time, standing waiting for the race horn to go off, it starts to rain. Actually it turned out to be a comfortable rain and not a downpour <a href="http://john-ontherun.blogspot.com/2009/05/downpour-during-jp-morgan-chase.html">like last year</a>. By the time I finished the race, it had stopped and a rainbow was gracing the sky. This year I did accomplish my goal of getting all my mile splits under 8 minutes to end up with a watch time of 27:37. So I am happy with this race result.<br /><br />The last couple of road races I’ve run this year I was disappointed with my performances. The Johnny’s Runnin’ of the Green (in March), I wasn’t in great running shape, and the Lilac 10K (May) I cruised in the last half of the race because I felt overheated as it was a warm muggy day. Next race – the Boilermaker in July. That is a fun race so I am looking forward to it!<br /><br />Picture note: Another for the D&C. I’ll blame it on busyness, laziness and Facebook. I did however do a lot of fun things since my last post and I have logged a lot of running miles. Perhaps too many? I walk around feeling like how a former professional football player must feel. Nothing serious, just the usual aches and pains associated with running and aging.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZXRW3iZrkCqTzjTGBPtMMeaELJKc1yfS7TXfiPdEBuBKd2Wgqo97hVUYbqPopYjR_ssxU13-Sk9tfilqU0cfezye-kcPY5jqkQFhwxBcWp91IX-ko77dTGcnNazI8g_UFb9vawBa8Axg/s1600-h/r7_metatarsalgia.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 129px; height: 113px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZXRW3iZrkCqTzjTGBPtMMeaELJKc1yfS7TXfiPdEBuBKd2Wgqo97hVUYbqPopYjR_ssxU13-Sk9tfilqU0cfezye-kcPY5jqkQFhwxBcWp91IX-ko77dTGcnNazI8g_UFb9vawBa8Axg/s200/r7_metatarsalgia.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387665890718736866" border="0" /></a>However the biggest nuisance is that my second toe on my right foot feels like it is sprained, and the ball of my foot feels like I stepped on a sharp rock. I have self-diagnosed it as <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/metatarsalgia/DS00496">metatarsalgia</a>. The problem is I’m not disciplined enough to give it time to heal up. I’ve repeated the following cycle a number of times now:<br /><br /><br /><ol><li>1. Take a few days off from running.</li><li>2. Foot feels a little better each day from this rest.</li><li>3. JoAnn will make a great dinner, or bake a wonderful apple pie, or something and I just can’t resist overeating!</li><li>4. I think - “Hey the foots getting better, I’ve got to get out for a run and burn some of these extra calories I’ve been eating lately.”</li><li>5. I run, I loosen up after a few miles, and feel great!</li><li>6. Next day, the metatarsalgia symptoms are back as severely as before, go to step 1. </li></ol><br />So that’s where I’m at currently. To make up for long period of no blog entries, here were some highlights from the summer.<br /><br />Going out to the <a href="http://ws100.com/">Western States 100 Mile Endurance Race</a> as part of the support crew for my nephew <a href="http://mainerunner.blogspot.com/">Jamie</a>.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCySHbsMS7SB60KeGdZjFuHuW9XoeqQVHMuCeqIzPt1JbrkCt41wimtcmOaRo8kx1kJWaiaAgKZHr9OhyIyD9F3rHRhUpP8YhhsmO0_E5xO_0sVlRlAwLMlrd-6ANuuc4EKMPwnSFeJ4c/s1600-h/100_9755.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCySHbsMS7SB60KeGdZjFuHuW9XoeqQVHMuCeqIzPt1JbrkCt41wimtcmOaRo8kx1kJWaiaAgKZHr9OhyIyD9F3rHRhUpP8YhhsmO0_E5xO_0sVlRlAwLMlrd-6ANuuc4EKMPwnSFeJ4c/s200/100_9755.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387660289570365762" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkiUMXmj6w_1rWrpK7qKznbLIh9NWw3gFewx7LBZJ6ZEt8ieoScI1hJEMKrBHgtRH2eIxVulbbUDviughVK2uL71vrvkq-KBfNPrYs-YW41ZuIq-VqBqyUUGhI7WeSKySZtR9qmrXsLWI/s1600-h/100_9829.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkiUMXmj6w_1rWrpK7qKznbLIh9NWw3gFewx7LBZJ6ZEt8ieoScI1hJEMKrBHgtRH2eIxVulbbUDviughVK2uL71vrvkq-KBfNPrYs-YW41ZuIq-VqBqyUUGhI7WeSKySZtR9qmrXsLWI/s200/100_9829.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387661524391216162" border="0" /></a><br /><br />• My first time running the Boilermaker 15K in Utica, NY in July. The race I’m referring to is last night’s 3.5 mile JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge Race held @ the Rochester Institute of Technology .<br /><br />I’ve run this race several times in previous years (PR: 25:43 – in 2006, which was in the first ½ century of my life) . This is always a well run race where you run as a member of your company. Most companies give you a specially designed t-shirt for the race, put up corporate tents, with some food/drink for their participants afterward. This event also presents good opportunities to network with others in and outside of your company.<br /><br />The turnout for the race was down this year to about 9,000 participants from 11,135 in 2008. The bad economy is being cited as the reason. Some of these folks are walkers, but there are plenty of runners too. Thus this makes for some crowded conditions throughout the race for a middle-of-the-pack runner like me, but especially during the first mile. Sometimes you’ve just have to let the crowd pace you along unless you want to be like Lebron James and juke left, right, and take a foul. I’m not into that – too tiring and dangerous! Unfortunately it took me almost 9 minutes to get to the first mile mark! I had hoped to break 28 minutes, but considering the crowds and rainy conditions, I did only 29:16. Each mile split time was progressively faster, with the last being sub 8 minutes, so I’m not overly disappointed.<br /><br />The party afterward was good but I didn’t hang around too long after getting a bite to eat as it and was cold and wet, and so was I.Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-46440740621901548912009-05-26T12:25:00.000-07:002009-05-26T16:09:31.155-07:001000 Islands Run<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHQrfF8SkNABep8nstE99ZpJ-E3N3ouRod2vnyI-Kt5oEIKgVOY21vq-8IFMdHbfH4joCilE2H5BRFIew4NTyzn00kQiqEAsgm_NyviBJLFwEYX86eP8wpQETGZKWFKxiAKAFlzPh2reE/s1600-h/1000islands-route.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 102px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHQrfF8SkNABep8nstE99ZpJ-E3N3ouRod2vnyI-Kt5oEIKgVOY21vq-8IFMdHbfH4joCilE2H5BRFIew4NTyzn00kQiqEAsgm_NyviBJLFwEYX86eP8wpQETGZKWFKxiAKAFlzPh2reE/s200/1000islands-route.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340218613753203970" border="0" /></a>We were up to “Cuz’s” place near Cape Vincent in the Thousand Islands region of New York for the Memorial Day weekend. We’ve been going there almost annually over the last 10 years or so. I only managed to get out for a run once however over the weekend - with “Neighbor Mike” on Saturday. It was a good one with the usually nice scenery. Most notable this year was the osprey and its nest on a utility pole. They were both huge! I walked back the next morning with “Coach” to take pictures of it.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0uWRNkZEiJvGBKyzwPvURHcCPTshP_YzSXeykzbrBMERkddb90qjp8snlihkFC26yPE6fH8MGek7Bys_dT7XDrMpxBDhiXgQXOXhlfCj5iOM6U2kopGOPe7xVLt_p8XIFRpX4Ag19NmE/s1600-h/osprey-takeoff.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 134px; height: 100px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0uWRNkZEiJvGBKyzwPvURHcCPTshP_YzSXeykzbrBMERkddb90qjp8snlihkFC26yPE6fH8MGek7Bys_dT7XDrMpxBDhiXgQXOXhlfCj5iOM6U2kopGOPe7xVLt_p8XIFRpX4Ag19NmE/s200/osprey-takeoff.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340220188229520258" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKYs4dQzUTEGBZkf1epnltb2hBcBSWccPJf1c77_au2SwpQOWFPqc3dG_Yvf018qJN8fQDmPPGM_4rftaHZ3xOqaaWbN0O0rt-s1UB64auI7sh804zHD1QMwTHRTLg3sG545y_j1a4KtY/s1600-h/osprey-nest.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 132px; height: 98px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKYs4dQzUTEGBZkf1epnltb2hBcBSWccPJf1c77_au2SwpQOWFPqc3dG_Yvf018qJN8fQDmPPGM_4rftaHZ3xOqaaWbN0O0rt-s1UB64auI7sh804zHD1QMwTHRTLg3sG545y_j1a4KtY/s200/osprey-nest.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340219120421126498" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-P6ZU2eFZMeh8_xuE1uJs6rXSHOkFJkuxxM9LPfu68hJz2GYb5DRsVdyx7skq4z9npPSWfksolyO_Eb4ukcBTJ9HVTiOIjEH2sTQahbH7UU1dVALQU06Ry_nsRp-LATMZ2kSeyoN39LY/s1600-h/osprey-closeup.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 140px; height: 93px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-P6ZU2eFZMeh8_xuE1uJs6rXSHOkFJkuxxM9LPfu68hJz2GYb5DRsVdyx7skq4z9npPSWfksolyO_Eb4ukcBTJ9HVTiOIjEH2sTQahbH7UU1dVALQU06Ry_nsRp-LATMZ2kSeyoN39LY/s200/osprey-closeup.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340219310311790514" border="0" /></a><br /><br />During the run Mike stopped part of the way, so I continued past the boat launch and causeway, <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HzROmgCwl7vfOL8ig7iEBSHqdDxwunxEQQYLy9oyMVa-thPOvvlAZXIQFh8t_5TgCya8XqKX8CG3sqm1lsHkHUolAtMoYv95y-AxxrP-8HOYiuFQJMGrhirgaqIbdvCHFz0VsJx3R-Q/s1600-h/after+run.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 114px; height: 171px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HzROmgCwl7vfOL8ig7iEBSHqdDxwunxEQQYLy9oyMVa-thPOvvlAZXIQFh8t_5TgCya8XqKX8CG3sqm1lsHkHUolAtMoYv95y-AxxrP-8HOYiuFQJMGrhirgaqIbdvCHFz0VsJx3R-Q/s200/after+run.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340221255510697490" border="0" /></a>to as far as the house with the rooster that crows whenever you go by it (just like a dog guarding its house). Then I turned around and met up with Mike on the way back. This was Mike’s first time up here, and not liking “out and back” runs, he wanted to turn down a road that I was pretty sure dead ends to a few houses on the lake. I humored him because I wanted to add an extra couple of miles to the run :-). The total distance for me was 6.27 miles.<br /><br />Interesting note - with no exercise on Sunday and Monday, this marks the first time since February 7th, <a href="http://john-ontherun.blogspot.com/2009/02/3-minutes.html">after tripping over a sidewalk and hurting my knee</a>, that I’ve taken more than one day off from exercise. This is an event where the lunch time runners at work get together and run from work to the <a href="http://www.lilacfestival.com/index.html">Lilac Festival</a>, have a hot dog, and then run back. The run back therefore offers several opportunities to re-taste the hot dog. The total distance covered is slightly under 7 miles.<br /><br />Turn out was light this year with only six of us able to make it. This is about half the number who went along the last couple of years. Regardless it was a fun run with lots of camaraderie and with the usual entertaining emails before hand determining who is going to run or not. Mike K’s excuse for not running today was that he is running the Cleveland marathon tomorrow. So to make up for missing the run today, he is going to have some hot dog flavored Gu tomorrow! Yuck!Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-91683040036472326902009-04-15T13:54:00.000-07:002009-04-15T13:59:57.144-07:00Ran into a "Tea Party"<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggntVZ3QNHWUYi_0nCWvJlmESQ2eaayGjmrwpxSNGQQ1pJZ1jtvPsnyt9oSpw4n1VOnmagbn7341vJ23WRkwYIeWgn2-PIyteObXmKJ_qAtCBhsrpygO3iLIPVFmbKbLJJPuL2YzTx4UE/s1600-h/teaparty.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggntVZ3QNHWUYi_0nCWvJlmESQ2eaayGjmrwpxSNGQQ1pJZ1jtvPsnyt9oSpw4n1VOnmagbn7341vJ23WRkwYIeWgn2-PIyteObXmKJ_qAtCBhsrpygO3iLIPVFmbKbLJJPuL2YzTx4UE/s200/teaparty.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325025596931398034" border="0" /></a>Some days I get to see interesting stuff during my lunchtime runs, and I knew today would be one of those days. I did the first part of my run on my usual route towards the University of Rochester, but instead of returning directly back to work, I made a slight detour over to Main Street. I knew there was to be a protest rally around some of the government office buildings as Rochester was one of many cities nationwide that were to have rallies today called “TEA parties” (TEA = “Taxed Enough Already”) to protest government spending on bailouts and stimulus packages.<br /><br />As I hit Main Street, the run was over as I stopped to take in the sites. I’d say there were about 500 people walking down Main Street - some carrying American and Gadsden (“Don’t Tread on Me”) flags, Ron Paul for President” placards (wasn’t that election last year?), and various homemade signs. They gathered at the County Office Building and started chanting “No More Spending. . . No More Spending”. There were several police around on foot, and on bikes and horses, mostly to ensure that traffic got re-routed. It was a pretty peaceful and controlled event. I can’t say I disagree with their protest either, however I started getting cold after a while so I ran back to work. <br /><br />Distance of run - 5 miles (4.25 miles to the ‘tea party”, .75 miles afterwards.)Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-66202777326620126892009-04-12T18:36:00.000-07:002009-04-12T18:41:50.966-07:00Run in Milford, Ct. - Silver Sands<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheSyd104odnDAWThgj09Ec-EGCMl-tfHUVAFp-shR3L9oMpe6krZ-30vnEZzXArVt0cxebYQ4MNKgiNb-r4cKBRpeuC1GPqQ2INoCW33pTlCecJ7bIy2MXGyCkWZHjvulaoBrJ5dbldkM/s1600-h/silver-sands-run.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheSyd104odnDAWThgj09Ec-EGCMl-tfHUVAFp-shR3L9oMpe6krZ-30vnEZzXArVt0cxebYQ4MNKgiNb-r4cKBRpeuC1GPqQ2INoCW33pTlCecJ7bIy2MXGyCkWZHjvulaoBrJ5dbldkM/s200/silver-sands-run.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323984854197835346" border="0" /></a>While visiting family for the weekend in Milford, Connecticut, I got out for a quick run early Sunday morning. I started from my brother-in-law’s house and ran over through the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Sands_State_Park">Silver Sands State Park</a> and back. It was a scenic run, however it was very cold (30 degrees) and windy. Part of the run was on the beach and my knee didn’t really care for parts where the sand was loose. I took it rather slow then and at one point an elderly gentleman was walking the opposite way, and we exchanged good morning pleasantries. As I passed he said, “I hope you make it.” Wow, did I look that bad?Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-87527651408350279142009-04-05T11:49:00.000-07:002009-04-05T12:41:59.540-07:00Sunday Run to Church. . .. . .ville. I did a 10 miler through the Village of Churchville that made for a pleasant run, on a sunny but chilly morning. This was my 3rd run with the Garmin. It brings an interesting dimension to the routine and certainly helps with the pacing. For this run I wanted to keep it under 10 minutes per mile. My average pace was 9:50/mi, mostly thanks to looking at the Garmin during the run.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCbh0TlStQEzZefYGygSmR0-tc4mQE5gkGqPkk2hBwHv-vkHjJlP1msHhNVma2dc4OONMWfSYdSi4lPVfaApQKsBAJ0hEF6lkoSOeAlVihBTLWttpTQtilCDYFPbu2jLNuROO8fM4sktw/s1600-h/snap2.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 181px; height: 128px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCbh0TlStQEzZefYGygSmR0-tc4mQE5gkGqPkk2hBwHv-vkHjJlP1msHhNVma2dc4OONMWfSYdSi4lPVfaApQKsBAJ0hEF6lkoSOeAlVihBTLWttpTQtilCDYFPbu2jLNuROO8fM4sktw/s200/snap2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321283676886823042" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvO9TBAKwpoxbsRcQCK97qR2FKQ44PM2hXRAvvZKaUOyItnvNGnJTQEpz1J3G4HBi6_ke8NgGM8OMyKX2QpgeS-322vp8b-Pav8gTCb-_PgWGVrU95T62XXf6ryWvNEnG1jopOJ_wMv0/s1600-h/snap.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 165px; height: 89px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvO9TBAKwpoxbsRcQCK97qR2FKQ44PM2hXRAvvZKaUOyItnvNGnJTQEpz1J3G4HBi6_ke8NgGM8OMyKX2QpgeS-322vp8b-Pav8gTCb-_PgWGVrU95T62XXf6ryWvNEnG1jopOJ_wMv0/s200/snap.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321282555879185842" border="0" /></a>Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-34346169469881722782009-03-22T17:32:00.001-07:002009-03-23T03:58:56.559-07:00Next 3/4 Miles - What! It is a 5-miler that is the opening road race for the season in the Rochester area. This is always a fun run because it kicks off St Patrick’s Day festivities downtown, including a long parade and plenty of Irish spirit. It was a beautiful morning with sunny skies and the temperature at the start of the race was 33 degrees. As a result, a record 1,520 runners participated, more than 500 from a year ago.<br /><br />I didn’t really know what to expect in this race considering I have not really pushed much beyond a 9 minute mile pace in my runs since dealing with my knee issues. My watch time for the race was 40:51, which is an 8:10/mi average pace - so I’m pretty happy with it. It took about a ½ mile or so to get to where you had some space to run at your pace so I am especially pleased that my first mile came in at 7:56. Other mile splits were 2: 8:04, 3: 7:55, 4: 8:35, 5: 8:21. I was overdressed and feeling it the last couple of miles and kinda gave up on hopes of breaking 40 minutes. <a href="http://www.pcrtiming.com/racedata/2009/03/green/GREENOVR.HTM">My official time for the race is 41:13</a> as it took 22 seconds to reach the start line, which is when I started my watch.<br /><br />I had no knee pain during the race and today feel no effects from the race. So although this is about 2 minutes slower than my <a href="http://www.pcrtiming.com/racedata/2008/03/green/GREENORD.HTM">finish time</a><a href="http://www.pcrtiming.com/racedata/2008/03/green/GREENORD.HTM"> from last year</a>, this race tells me that things are okay - I can still enjoy running in a race! And we had our usual good time with everyone after the race. . . I almost came to a standstill running directly into the wind when heading south along the river. At one point I had to dodge a big piece of cardboard litter blowing in the wind. And for some reason this incident got me thinking the rest of the run about those flying toaster screen savers everyone used to have back in 90’s. I wonder what happened to them? Why did they even exist?Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-41696950396202693962009-03-07T09:47:00.001-08:002009-03-07T10:17:07.911-08:00More Signs of SpringDuring a 9-plus mile run this morning, even more signs of spring were noticed:<br /><br /><ul><li>We are having a nice warm spell the last couple of days so the geese and wood ducks are migrating north. So I guess it will be some time before I see some of signs of spring on the river itself such as <a href="http://john-ontherun.blogspot.com/2008/10/first-off-congrats-to-jamie-for-his.html">collegiate crew teams practicing</a>, or the return of the <a href="http://john-ontherun.blogspot.com/2008/08/two-days-in-row.html">Mary Jemison cruise boat</a>. However, the last couple of runs I have done this week have been during days with wall-to-wall sunshine. It has been very cold yes, but other signs of spring are all around. The sun is shining longer and higher, the snow on the ground is getting less and less, potholes in the road are appearing, I saw my first robin of the season recently while cross-country skiing, the sap in the maple trees is starting to flow, and we move the clocks ahead this weekend! Next up - crocuses will be sprouting.Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-64723089985103492542009-02-28T19:57:00.001-08:002009-03-01T06:26:25.146-08:00The Office<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4xnK-9dpzU2_hBMrlDDngX5YecVX11XxgXOg-rxdztV4NgUAwkTH4r7remEL16Xit5xWmQuSK91wfoLp5tpvIqn1Hg57Jo49HDHNjWJptg3za_kGKwhUNvNkHtcmMM_wKvnGpRL2y1D8/s1600-h/basementb15.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 119px; height: 90px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4xnK-9dpzU2_hBMrlDDngX5YecVX11XxgXOg-rxdztV4NgUAwkTH4r7remEL16Xit5xWmQuSK91wfoLp5tpvIqn1Hg57Jo49HDHNjWJptg3za_kGKwhUNvNkHtcmMM_wKvnGpRL2y1D8/s200/basementb15.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308057939661395906" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOWm8iKREv_pNa5XlC65BNujySlvE0YumB5rq-G5RPjhbRTZrwA-5RHgPI_bqGNva-EXPq4xVAJ_a-z5TmHoo7rRFKYlITvlUGdz-UX6u2nZHCDN-tC9ICV5YxzryToJKqy37VDXHUjlg/s1600-h/doorsealedsign.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 119px; height: 91px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOWm8iKREv_pNa5XlC65BNujySlvE0YumB5rq-G5RPjhbRTZrwA-5RHgPI_bqGNva-EXPq4xVAJ_a-z5TmHoo7rRFKYlITvlUGdz-UX6u2nZHCDN-tC9ICV5YxzryToJKqy37VDXHUjlg/s200/doorsealedsign.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308058368314030946" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFj-llZbmi-buXjha_Xznv_fxinu2qBihyAQZSP6_8EsCtfNOxEgwhubbI4KRxy05OQ3y5sQUXM59cdwd9CHwBwl6iJddd6_R1ERseVaAOLds80xxkez97kHkrTqJEapqr5zSM4h6xVbA/s1600-h/deadplant.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 119px; height: 89px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFj-llZbmi-buXjha_Xznv_fxinu2qBihyAQZSP6_8EsCtfNOxEgwhubbI4KRxy05OQ3y5sQUXM59cdwd9CHwBwl6iJddd6_R1ERseVaAOLds80xxkez97kHkrTqJEapqr5zSM4h6xVbA/s200/deadplant.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308058623183021954" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I wish this was about the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, but unfortunately this is real.<br /><br />During a recent scheduled day of rest from running, I decided to at least get a walk in at lunchtime. It was nasty outside with the wind blowing, rain changing into snow, and the temperature dropping faster than my 401K. So I decided to just walk inside around my office complex.<br /><br />The complex is a series of office buildings that takes up a large city block(s). Some of the buildings are six stories tall, some nine, and the largest tower in the center is 19 stories tall. This obviously presents lots of opportunities to get in some stairs, to walk down long hallways, and unfortunately, to look around.<br /><br />As pictured, several floors are no longer used due to the uncountable layoffs we have had throughout the years, a whole building on the south side of the complex is completely empty and sealed off, throughout plants are left behind dead because continuing to have “plant maintenance” personnel for the complex is an unnecessary expense.<br /><br />Now I see these sites everyday in going for example, from the parking lot to my office, or to a specific conference room in the complex. However, this extended walk, without a specific destination, really brought home just how far this company has declined.<br /><br />I think going outside in the miserable weather would have been a better idea.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOWm8iKREv_pNa5XlC65BNujySlvE0YumB5rq-G5RPjhbRTZrwA-5RHgPI_bqGNva-EXPq4xVAJ_a-z5TmHoo7rRFKYlITvlUGdz-UX6u2nZHCDN-tC9ICV5YxzryToJKqy37VDXHUjlg/s1600-h/doorsealedsign.jpg"><br /></a>Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10080478270072757493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7391637762077901531.post-55880338662588452072009-02-10T19:30:00.000-08:002009-02-11T04:40:59.766-08:00Recovery RoadThe road to recovery was completed in six days.
